The Value of the Team: Olympic champions Maica García and Martina Terre speak at INEFC about roles, team life and cohesion
BCN Sports Film Festival held today at INEFC the parallel activity “The Value of the Team”, a session designed to look at sport from the inside: how a locker room is built, how bonds are sustained, and what happens when performance truly depends on the collective.
After the screening, the audience took part in a talk that brought to the table some of the most decisive (and least visible) topics in high-performance sport: roles, shared leadership, living together across youth and experience, and how starter/substitute dynamics can affect cohesion and trust within a group.
A direct conversation about what you don’t see (but changes everything)
The discussion focused on what is rarely visible from the outside, yet often shapes a team’s daily life: how frustration is managed when things don’t go well, how athletes live with demands and constant comparison, and which strategies help maintain confidence when there is pressure, limited minutes or tough technical decisions.
It also touched on very “locker-room” realities: the importance of feeling useful even when you are not in the spotlight, the value of quiet roles (the one who drives training, the one who holds the group on a bad day, the one who leads without raising their voice), and the need to build an internal culture where feedback is thoughtful, communication is clear, and respect remains in moments of tension.
In an elite context—where different personalities and career stages coexist—the talk opened reflection on how to balance competitiveness and camaraderie, how to integrate newcomers, how to support someone going through a rough patch, and how to bring the group back together after a defeat or a conflict.

The talk featured Maica García and Martina Terre (Olympic water polo champions), together with Marcelí Massafret (coach and team manager), coordinated by Matilde Ortiz, journalist and Olympic medalist in water polo, who guided the conversation with the audience.
