Barcelona is getting ready to enjoy a week dedicated to cinema and sport with the 16th edition of BCN Sports Film, taking place from February 23 to March 3. The festival, firmly established as one of the leading international references in sports cinema, turns the city into a meeting point for sport, culture, and audiovisual storytelling, with a diverse, inclusive program open to all audiences. Growth and International Recognition BCN Sports Film continues to grow in prestige and global reach. This year, the festival received productions from 91 countries after reviewing a total of 3,200 films, of which 861 were officially submitted. The selection jury—composed of Joan Manuel Surroca, Julio Pernas, Mireia Vicente, and Agustí Argelich—viewed 680 productions and ultimately selected 85 films from 30 countries. Barcelona has presented today the 16th edition of the BCN Sports Film Festival, which will take place from 23 February to 3 March, strengthening the city’s role as a meeting point for sport, culture and audiovisual storytelling, with a diverse, inclusive programme open to all audiences. The virtual press conference featured David Escudé, President of the Barcelona Olympic Foundation and Barcelona City Council’s Councillor for Sports; Francesc Terrón, Director of the Barcelona Olympic Foundation; and Agustí Argelich, the festival’s Director. The event opened with the screening of the winning spot of the SpotSport 2026 competition, “L’Esport viu aquí”, by Dries Vanherwegen. In his remarks, David Escudé highlighted the festival’s international growth and the goal of continuing to bring it closer to wider audiences while maintaining an accessible, high-quality programme. He emphasized the rigour and transparency of the selection process and the effort to build an increasingly complete programme, with venues across Barcelona and the metropolitan area. The 16th edition of the BCN Sports Film Festival (23 February – 3 March 2026) reinforces a trend the festival has observed over the past two years: more and more sports films are directed or co-directed by women. In this year’s main programme, over 30% of the selected productions have been directed or co-directed by women, within a final selection chosen by a selection jury made up of 3 men and 1 woman.
