Barcelona Hosts the 16th Edition of BCN Sports Film from February 23 to March 3

Barcelona is getting ready to enjoy a week dedicated to cinema and sport with the 16th edition of BCN Sports Film, taking place from February 23 to March 3. The festival, firmly established as one of the leading international references in sports cinema, turns the city into a meeting point for sport, culture, and audiovisual storytelling, with a diverse, inclusive program open to all audiences. 

Growth and International Recognition 

BCN Sports Film continues to grow in prestige and global reach. This year, the festival received productions from 91 countries after reviewing a total of 3,200 films, of which 861 were officially submitted. The selection jury—composed of Joan Manuel Surroca, Julio Pernas, Mireia Vicente, and Agustí Argelich—viewed 680 productions and ultimately selected 85 films from 30 countries. Of these, 47 became finalists and were evaluated by the official jury made up of Janine Piguet, Laura Yuste, Marta Brichs, Martí Niubó, and Masih Sharif. 

 

“The level and quality of the submitted works make the selection process increasingly demanding,” the organizers note, thanking the jury for their work in maintaining the festival’s prestige and high standards. 

A Broad and Diverse Program 

In this edition, 85 productions from 30 countries make up the program. The festival will offer 39 sessions at various venues across the city and surrounding areas, including 7 school screenings, 5 screenings in correctional facilities, 2 educational and training sessions, 1 industry session, 2 ceremonies, and 22 general screenings. 

 

Screenings will take place at renowned cultural, educational, and sports venues, including the Joan Antoni Samaranch Olympic and Sports Museum, Girona Cinemas, Mercè Rodoreda Theatre, INEFC, the French Institute of Barcelona, EUSES – Campus de Salt, Bon Pastor Civic Center, Cotxeres de Sants Civic Center, Ateneu Sant Just, Club Natació Sabadell, as well as correctional facilities and schools. 

 

ONLINE SCREENINGS

In addition to in-person screenings, BCN Sports Film expands its reach through a digital offering. The festival will also be available via the Festhome platform, making its content accessible to audiences around the world. At the same time, online school sessions are already available, reinforcing the festival’s commitment to education and audiovisual dissemination. 

 

INDUSTRY SESSIONS 

The festival also strengthens its role as a space for debate and learning for audiovisual professionals and students. Notable industry sessions include: 

  • “How to Legally Approach the Audiovisual Creation of a Documentary”: organised by PAC and with the participation of Cristina Calvet, lawyer specialised in audiovisual and cultural law; Lisa Berger, documentary filmmaker; and Eva Fontanals, vice-president of Productors Audiovisuals de Catalunya. The session will address the legal challenges faced by documentary creators, from image rights to production contracts. Monday 23 at 11 am at the Museu Olímpic i de l’Esport. 

 

  • “Women Direct: Directing, Producing and Changing the Game: The Female Gaze in Sports Audiovisuals”: coordinated by Josep Maria Farràs, Head of Sports Broadcasting and Programming at 3Cat, with the participation of directors Mireia Vicente, Trini Gutiérrez and Cristina Malo. This session highlights the female perspective in sports audiovisual production, exploring how women directors bring new viewpoints, approaches and sensitivity to sports stories, while promoting the visibility of women creators in a historically male-dominated sector. Wednesday 25 at 6 pm at Cinemes Girona 

 

SOCIAL AND EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS 

BCN Sports Film maintains its commitment to inclusion, education, and social transformation through sport: 

  • “Acció Cinema: Raising Awareness”: aimed at students, in collaboration with Acció Cinema and the NGO Ramassà, this session presents stories of social commitment, justice and positive change, demonstrating how sport can be a tool to build a more supportive and sustainable society. We will be joined by Tijan Konteh, Head of Awareness at AE Ramassà. Thursday 26 at 12 pm at the Museu Olímpic 

 

  • “Ones de canvi: Sustainability at Sea”: with the participation of Gerard Esteva, president of the Unió de Federacions Esportives de Catalunya; directors Carlos Sánchez Llibre and Philippe Mistral; and coordinated by Mariana Dornelles, Educational Projects at Fundació Carulla, this session reflects on ocean sustainability and the responsibility to protect marine ecosystems through sports and educational projects. Tuesday 24 at 6:30 pm at the Museu Olímpic 

 

  • “Laure: Mental Health and Privacy”: organised together with Club Natació Sabadell and the Brain Film Festival, this screening addresses mental health and privacy, exploring the personal and professional lives of elite sports protagonists. We will be joined by Dennis González, artistic swimmer; Raül Romeva, researcher in sport and values; and the discussion will be moderated by María Teresa Pérez, psychiatrist at Fundació Vidal i Barraquer and advisor to the Brain Film Festival – Fundació Pasqual Maragall. Tuesday 24 at 7 pm at Cinemes Imperial, Sabadell 

 

  • “Mother and Footballer: Mothers On and Off the Pitch: Maternity, Professional Career and Resilience in Sport” professional footballers share their experiences of balancing motherhood with high-performance sport, offering an intimate look at the emotional and physical challenges of maternity in elite sport. This session will feature a very special ambassador, Ona Carbonell, president of the Maternity and Sport Commission of the Spanish Olympic Committee. Sunday, March 1 at 6 pm at Cinemes Girona. 

 

  • “The Value of the Team: Role Dynamics Within a Team”: Maica García and Martina Terre, two Olympic water polo champions, will explain the dynamics of roles within a team, showing how seniority and youth, as well as starting positions and substitutes, influence group cohesion and performance. Marcel·lí Massafret, coach and team manager, will also take part in the panel.

The 16th edition of BCN Sports Film reaffirms the festival’s commitment to promoting sports cinema, audiovisual education, and the social impact of sport. From February 23 to March 3, Barcelona will once again experience sport through cinema.
